Partial Care vs. Outpatient Programming (OP) for Addiction and Mental Health

Drug and alcohol addiction can impact every part of your life. It can deplete your health, harm your emotional well-being, and disrupt your relationships. Living with an untreated addiction makes it almost impossible to live a healthy, fulfilling lifestyle.

Choosing to seek substance abuse treatment is one of the most life-affirming decisions you’ll make. Finding the right type of treatment is essential. You must get the help you require in a setting that meets your unique needs.

Several factors can affect the type of treatment you need to begin your recovery journey. The severity of your addiction, your mental health, and your substance abuse history can impact your needs in recovery.

This article will explore two levels of addiction treatment: partial care programs and outpatient rehab. You’ll learn the differences between these common levels of care and how to find treatment for a substance use disorder.

What is Partial Care?

A partial care program is an intensive level of outpatient rehab. Some treatment facilities refer to partial care programs as “day treatment” or “partial hospitalization programs (PHP).”

Partial care programs offer a high level of outpatient support for people living with addiction or mental health conditions. Mental health and medical specialists design partial care programs to mimic the intensive schedule of an inpatient rehab program. Unlike inpatient care, patients return home at the end of treatment sessions.

People who attend partial care programs follow specialized treatment plans. Treatment plans typically include:

Partial care programs require a significant time commitment. People in partial programs attend treatment sessions all or most days of the week. Daily treatment sessions may last up to 8 hours. In total, people spend between 25 and 40 hours in therapeutic recovery activities.

Partial care programs may be ideal for people who are receiving treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions. This level of care provides critical treatment and support for people who have intensive needs during rehab but who do not require inpatient treatment.

Partial care programs can last several weeks and some last much longer. Your treatment team will monitor your progress and adjust your plan as needed.

What is Outpatient Rehab?

There are several types of outpatient treatment programming. Intensive outpatient programs offer a significant level of support, while outpatient rehab programs offer a more flexible form of rehab.

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) offer high-quality, flexible care for people who do not require inpatient admission. Those in intensive outpatient drug rehab may spend up to 30 hours per week in treatment.

Intensive outpatient treatment focuses on helping people identify and address the roots of their substance abuse. People participate in evidence-based and holistic treatments, including:

  • Individual therapy
  • Behavioral therapies
  • Family therapy
  • Support groups
  • Relapse prevention education
  • Coping skills
  • Aftercare planning
  • Nutrition support, mindfulness, exercise, and other holistic therapies

Outpatient rehab programs offer a less intensive level of support. Patients may attend treatment sessions 10-12 hours per week in outpatient rehab programs. They engage in therapy, mental health care, support groups, and education.

Outpatient rehab programs can support sobriety as people transition back into daily life after inpatient treatment or a higher level of care.

Partial Care vs Outpatient Rehab

Partial care programs and outpatient rehab programs provide different levels of support for people living with addiction.

Essential features of partial care include:

  • Intensive treatment
  • A rigorous treatment schedule requiring up to 40 hours per week
  • Significant mental health support
  • Tailored treatment
  • A highly structured treatment schedule
  • Ideal for people who require mental health or medical treatment during rehab

Essential features of outpatient care include:

  • Flexible schedule, requiring 10-30 hours per week depending on your needs
  • Focus on psychotherapy, group support, and education
  • Adaptable level of care
  • Allows people to transition into other types of treatment as needed

The level of care you require depends on your unique needs and goals. Before beginning treatment, you will consult with medical and mental health professionals to determine which level of treatment is right for you.

Which Level of Care is Right For Me?

Your experiences and needs in recovery are unique. Getting the tailored treatment you need to help you reach your goals is essential.

Before starting treatment, a doctor or addiction specialist will assess your needs. The assessment will include:

  • Questions about your substance use
  • Medical and mental health history
  • Family history of addiction and mental health conditions
  • Lab testing
  • Physical examination

This information will allow your treatment team to recommend the appropriate level of care.
