What Percentage of Teens Use Drugs?

Teen drug use may be less common than many parents believe.

While current trends and statistics are encouraging, it’s still important to recognize that some teens experiment with substances. Understanding when experimentation may be developing into a larger concern can help families seek support early.

At The Living Room, our New Jersey addiction treatment center provides compassionate, evidence-based care for individuals and families affected by substance use.

What Percentage of Teens Use Drugs?

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s 2025 Monitoring the Future Survey, most teenagers report not using marijuana, alcohol, or nicotine.

This survey measures teen substance use over the past 30 days and shows:

  • 91% of 8th graders reported abstaining from marijuana, alcohol, and nicotine.
  • 82% of 10th graders reported abstaining.
  • 66% of 12th graders reported abstaining.

While these numbers are encouraging, substance use does become more common as teens get older.

For example, the same survey of teen substance use showed that, during the past 12 months:

  • 41% of 12th graders reported drinking alcohol.
  • 26% reported using cannabis.
  • 20% reported nicotine vaping.

Use of substances such as cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine remained very low among all grade levels.

Why Monitor Teen Drug Use Trends?

Even though overall drug use among teens remains lower than in previous decades, early substance use can still have lasting effects on a young person’s physical health, brain development, emotional well-being, and academic success.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), adolescents who misuse drugs are at greater risk for:

Because many adults with substance use disorders first began using substances during adolescence or young adulthood, recognizing concerns early and seeking support can make a meaningful difference.

When to Seek Help for Your Teen’s Drug Use

Occasional experimentation does not always lead to addiction, but changes in behavior may suggest that your teen could benefit from additional support.

Parents and caregivers should pay attention to signs such as:

  • Sudden mood or personality changes
  • Declining grades or school attendance
  • Withdrawing from family or friends
  • Secretive behavior
  • Loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed
  • Unexplained financial problems
  • Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy levels

If you are concerned about a teen’s substance use, speaking with a qualified behavioral health professional can help determine the most appropriate next steps.
